The good practices of environmental management adopted by Bahia Specialty Cellulose are consistent with the legislation in force and ensure the sustainability of operations. Facilities and equipment have been designed taking into account our commitment to maintain environmental quality. For this reason, our industrial unit has been awarded ISO 9001 certification since 1998, and ISO 14001 certification since 2005.
Generation of electricityThe specialty cellulose production process itself generates all the energy consumed by our mill. The burning of organic and inorganic wastes generated by industrial activities creates steam, while at the same time most of the chemical inputs are recovered and then reused in the production process.
The steam produced in the process makes the industry self-sufficient in the generation of the electricity needed for its operations.
Liquid effluents created at the factory are routed to Cetrel S.A., an environmental protection company that is responsible for treating all the effluents of the Camaçari Industrial Complex.
Solid waste is collected from all company areas, separated by category and not mixed together. After being treated, some of these residues, such as lime mud, for example, are used in farming to offset soil acidity, or as a raw material for the production of flooring, surface coverings and tiles. Sawdust is used as fuel for ceramic producers in to make bricks and roof tiles. Paper, plastic, glass and metal are collected and sent to companies specializing in their recycling.
The water used at the mill, brought in from our own artesian wells, comes from the São Sebastião aquifer, one of Brazil's largest deep-water reservoirs.
To minimize atmospheric emissions and the characteristic odor of the mill, we use electrostatic precipitators in the recovery boiler and in the lime kiln. There is also an incinerator for malodorous gases generated by the process. Emissions are regularly monitored and evaluated as part of the effort to comply with required standards and licenses.
